How to Keep Your Poinsettias Alive in Singapore | December 2025

Posted by Katong Flower Shop on

The bright red and green leaves of poinsettias are a holiday favourite in homes and offices across Singapore. But once the festivities are over, many wonder—how do I keep my poinsettia alive beyond Christmas?

With the right care, these beautiful plants can last well into the new year—and even thrive! Here’s how to keep your poinsettias fresh and healthy in Singapore’s warm, humid climate.

1. Choose the Right Spot – Bright, Indirect Light

Poinsettias need plenty of indirect sunlight, but harsh afternoon sun in Singapore can scorch their leaves. Place them near a bright window with filtered light or in a shaded balcony.

✅ Avoid direct midday sun
✅ Rotate the plant every few days so it grows evenly

2. Water Moderately – Don’t Overwater

Poinsettias don’t like soggy soil. Water only when the top inch of soil feels dry.

  • Water thoroughly, but allow excess water to drain out

  • Never let the pot sit in standing water

  • Reduce watering if the room is cool or the plant is not growing

💡 Too much water can cause root rot—one of the most common reasons poinsettias fail after Christmas.

3. Keep It Cool (But Not Cold)

Poinsettias prefer cooler indoor temperatures, ideally around 20–24°C. Avoid placing them near fans, air-cons, or warm appliances.

❌ Avoid sudden temperature changes
✅ Keep away from cold drafts and direct wind

4. Prune & Maintain After Christmas

After the festive season, you can prune your poinsettia to encourage new growth.

  • Cut back the stems in late January or February, leaving about 4–6 inches

  • Remove faded or dry leaves

  • Repot if needed using well-draining soil

This gives your plant a fresh start for the year ahead!

5. Can I Get It to Bloom Again Next Christmas?

Yes, but it requires effort and a light control routine starting around October. From there, you’ll need to give the plant 14–16 hours of darkness daily for 6–8 weeks to trigger blooming.

For most, it’s easier to enjoy them during the holidays and treat them as seasonal plants—or just refresh with a new one next year!
